My dreams of joining the British Merchant navy and strolling the deck in a white uniform, are shattered by a punch in the mouth within hours of boarding my first ship. This is the true story of how I traveled across the world as a cadet on a Tramp Ship in the British Merchant Navy in 1961. From South America, where I witnessed the terror of the military, to the South China Sea, where the ship almost sank in massive waves in a typhoon, and on to Okinawa, where the ship caught fire, we lurched from one disaster to another.
There are several other Australian writers and poets appearing at the Festival. It also includes a program on the 20th anniversary of the Bali bombings and the island’s subsquent recovery.
