A Self-Proclaimed Teacher

A Self-Proclaimed Teacher

I write this to remind myself that my writing is an autobiography about the birth of my questions. I am not writing to impress or to teach. In fact, I am a flawed human like everyone else, and I do not pretend otherwise. I love the shape of a woman, I enjoy dancing, good food and drinks, and I embrace luxury and comfort, though I detest stupidity, pretence and lack of dignity. And I am not ashamed of eating meat, nor do I encourage vegetarians to change their habits.

I am not a preacher, yet ironically, here I am going to talk about a teacher.

I have used the names of Jesus, Buddha and Rumi many times in my writings. Do not be confused, though. I am not looking at them as teachers, but as reflections of humanity.

Do not waste your time on perfection.

The only person who could call themselves a teacher must be a perfect person, and such a thing does not exist. Ubermensch, the ideal of a perfect being, is only a fantasy to distract us even more.

And I am not teaching here. I am only sharing my observations. God has gifted every human being, and not only humanity but all those creators who mix their genetic material for the creation of a unique one, with uniqueness. I asked myself, if God wanted us to follow others, why did He bother to make me special and unique?

One of the major traps is the sage, or the teacher. Almost all spiritual sects have roots in religion, and religion is purely for education and control (yet I am not encouraging atheism, if religion works for someone, if it brings unity and does not evoke separation, that is fair enough), based on a system designed by minorities who see themselves as perfect human beings, or at least superior to others, or as selected people. These days, the owners of many zeros, politicians, psychologists, influencers, and media owners are as such. And so are scientists when they claim to hold the final answer, and so are the holders of titles and trophies.

We can be taught how to write or read, or learn a skill or a trade, we may learn how to meditate but never learn HOW to meditate if we never learn it for ourselves. A soup I make always tastes different, even though I have taken it from my own published recipe book used by many.

Yet, I must emphasise that I am not opposing those who like to follow religions. Rumi’s formation is purely based on religion, and he found his path through such a way, but does it work for me? Of course not.

Here I see, once the vessel of humanity overflows, words and actions become one. Buddha, Jesus and Rumi may have reached the limitless and dimensionless level, but through different paths. They expanded their chalices, which drank many times, until they drank from the horizonless sea.

Once one gets there, diversity in words and actions disappears. Instead, they all become pure seeing, the truth itself.

These human beings are only there to tell us: a human is not born but becomes. We are all  here to discover our own container, no matter a small cup or a big vase. We can only upgrade once we fill up the existing one.

Buddha, Jesus, Rumi and others have reached their limits and expanded them to infinity, yet they were not perfect, because a perfect visible being simply does not exist.

Then everyone can see as I see, God is not a holy creature who needs a house, or special people, or a specific book, or followers or pilgrims. They learn God is delicate and beautiful, is poetry and nothing harsh and cruel, not a God whose wrath is to destroy and whose vendetta never ends against His enemies.

God will not order anyone or any group to kill, sacrifice or murder others for His sake.

God talks to everyone and talks to no one. I see the world is abundant with Him. He talks to us nonstop if we stop talking, if we stop begging and nagging. And He has not spoken, does not speak, and will not speak to only one person, as some call themselves chosen ones or prophets.

Once we call something holy, we fear asking questions. Hence nothing as holy or sacred exists.

And  if I open my eyes, I can learn from the gaze of a stranger toward the horizon. Teachers are not sophisticated creatures. Nothing is extraordinary by nature, but our creativity can make the extraordinary out of anything, too ordinary, or even tedious.

Apart from the trap of mentorship, there is a greater trap in my way, and that is the trap of knowing and belief. I would rather see than claim I know. Just as with holy, sacred and even taboo, when I claim I know or believe in something, I stop seeing.

And yet many teachings worldwide speak of the concept of love, terrestrial or celestial. In my previous poem, “Wisdom and Sage: Both Traps,” I was talking about the fire which does not exist naturally and needs to be ignited, and many thought it was about love.

In my opinion, the love that is spoken of in the common language, in Hollywood form, has been overrated and exaggerated. That love is simply about sexual desire or the kick of hormones and has nothing to do with ignition of fire.

In the past, since society was so gender segregated and thanks to religion, women were the property of the households, and the concept of love was a taboo unless it was dressed as something else. In my opinion, love presented in the old manuscripts came from repressed or suppressed sexual desire. In a fanatically religious society, the love of those who showed no abstinence from sex was interpreted as spiritual, unearthly desire. In fact, except for Jesus, Buddha, Rumi, Hafiz and Saadi had earthly wives or lovers, and perhaps other Sufi and spiritual masters did too. Yet their earthly love was presented as something spiritual, which in my opinion was a mistaken interpretation, though I can clearly sense that for some, their own fire was ignited, and they knew the difference. So perhaps it was not the intention of those masters to make such claims. Maybe they accepted the earthly desire as part of their further growth, and it was blinded, idolising followers who made that interpretation to suit their belief system.

And these days it is only about the infatuation of seeing a new person undressed. And thanks to capitalism, everything is an option with a price tag, and always a better option. So how about we stop hurting each other under the name of love and call what we want out loud?

A mother loves her children, but even that is an act of nature, and it has not been ignited. I am grateful to God for showing me the answer to my question about fire, though dear reader, bear it in mind that it was my question and not yours.

The only thing I would like to share with you, not as teaching but only as my observation, is this. We have our mortal body with a lot of emotions and desires, and I am not excluded. I tell myself to be aware of it. I was born with all these not to suppress them, but to be aware of my desires and needs at the time. By seeing them, I would be able to see other aspects of my life too. There is no probability nor certainty, but being. When we start calling things in sophisticated manners, we are only engaged with the wrapping.

And as I have mentioned a lot, as a reminder to myself: a true teacher is not the one who gives you the answer, but the one who helps you to find your question. A right question is not a question with an answer. It is a generative question, the one that creates a new question, and that leads to another. So do not waste yourself on a mentor, but search for signs. Even a mentor cannot teach you how to read the signs, since the signs throughout my journey will be tailored to who I am.

Along this journey, not only does the universe give me the answers, but questions as well. Only through this journey will I learn my place in the symphony.

This journey of uniqueness is lonely, though we meet some travellers along the way, some pivotal, some formative, and some quietly alongside. I am grateful for their presence in my life. That is how I see: a human is not born, human becomes.

I am nothing but gratitude.

Y no estoy enseñando aquí.
