Part I: The Walk Through the Ecological Path

A birthday is always a hassle for me, never something I look forward to. I ridicule the occasion, yet it stares me in the face, whispering: Hey old man, I have got you a year older. I do not live from one occasion to another, so I am not sure whether it is the gravity of the stars or the voice of heaven that makes me look back, ponder, and wonder, when my eyes are normally fixed forward.

Yet this year, the ritual of dusting the monastery of light within me started a week early. During a long walk through the different chambers and halls of my self-constructed sanctuary, alone with my thoughts, I realised something new about myself, arriving at a monumental question: Why on earth am I here?

Though not in fairyland, I was walking through a marsh full of muddy puddles, where footprints stand until the sun casts them into eternity, making my question feel even more profound. Rabbits and stray grasshoppers jumped around, and the sound of crickets stirred a nostalgia for summer in the middle of autumn. Crossing a rugged field toward Playa Cristal, I passed an isolated white house facing the water. It was a fantastic, secluded place. I found myself wondering: What kind of people own a place like this?

Then it hit me: normal people. People who took the normal path. People I could have been. If I had stayed on my original trajectory, I could easily be the owner of one of those houses. But I chose not to. In my twenties, I had a business, I was making money, and I was in a stable relationship. I left it all behind for something that, back then, I could not yet name. I am not saying I would have become a tycoon or built a business empire; I will never know. I still do not know exactly what I was searching for, but I know for certain it was not about owning a beachside house, accumulating wealth, or settling down with a wife and kids. Now, I just need to find the silence to create the space for the answer to arrive. I might find it, or I might not. But at least I know that being right here was entirely my own choice.

Part II: A Chat to My Unborn Child

The next day brought a four hour walk from Playa Honda to Cabo de Palos, past the lighthouse and back. Along the way, I watched people chilling at the beach. Some seemed completely free, purely enjoying themselves; others were quite reserved.
The children, though, were having the most fun. Why? Because they are children. They possess vast imaginations, whereas adults have had their minds limited by adulthood, a boundary we call reality. Children can think freely. They can build a castle in the sand and truly believe it is real, or that one day they are going to own it.
During this walk, the question returned to me with total clarity: Why am I here?
Thinking back to my question from yesterday, I realised that if I had a child, this is the answer I would give them:
I am a little creature among many. I am not going to change history. No one really does. People often misuse the phrase “changing history.”
History is simply the story of the past; whatever happens becomes a part of it. Those who assume they are changing history, whether through acquiring more money, chasing more achievements, or even by inflicting devastating distress and violence upon other humans, are mistaken. Sadly, there will always be someone else to exceed their numbers. I am not undermining accomplishments like a bitter loser. On the contrary, I admire achievements as a way of expanding our human limitations. But truth be told, if your goal is just to become a statistic, there is a book called the Guinness World Records, and even that is updated every year.
I have lived half of my life, perhaps even more. For the remainder of it, I am simply going to play along. I pledge not to hurt anyone, not to take advantage of anyone, and I will not let anyone take advantage of me. And if someone does, which is highly likely, given how many cunning people are out there, I will not suffer for it. We are simply not the same.
After the games of fame, wealth, and adventure lost their shine, I found that the joys of life are quite simple. It is almost sad that they are so simple, but it is true. Though some still like to turn primal, even savage joys into something more flamboyant and exhilarating, as if the true nature of basic instinct could be upgraded, it is an illusion. They chase an orgy rather than sex, a bal masqué rather than socialising with friends, a ten course meal rather than good food, or a lavish public proposal with a heavily mortgaged diamond under the illusion of love. They crave the power of big lights and high stages born from money or manipulation. Yet, despite all efforts to change the facade, the basic joys remain nothing but sex, food, friends, power, and love.
For some, including myself, art and the deeper meaning of intellectuality, spirituality, and authenticity are what truly count. For me, life holds its breath for a moment at the opera house, admiring the combination of creativity and intellectuality with a deeper level of emotion, all in one. I love to see how far human boundaries can be pushed, even if I occasionally get annoyed by a foolish audience.
So, my dear unborn child, the answer is this: regardless of the pillars of your joy, simply enjoy life with whatever you have in hand. Do not waste your time waiting for an unborn future, though always try to create and present a better version of yourself.
The passing years have stolen the illusion of dreams, but surprisingly, I am content. It seems nature has tamed my roaring spirit. I have been seeking answers down many avenues: art, spirituality, philosophy, the universe, light, and God. Despite finding many exciting answers at different times, I am about to sheathe my sword and stop struggling. We are humans, endowed with many gifts. I am still hoping to discover my own unique one, though if it does not reveal itself, I can comfortably say: I have done my best.

Part III: The Forever Rebellious Warrior

On the third day, sitting on my balcony with the white house in the background, I realised that though the sword may be sheathed, a true warrior never retires.

Though primal joys have always been the main driving force of society, which is sad but true, humanity is about something higher: growth, and the capacity to change and be changed.

Like everyone else, I hold the key to Carmen, or to the United Kingdom or the United States of Hell, yet I have chosen my own camino of growth.

The alternative path is overcrowded, swarmed by the cameras and spotlights of social media; it seems almost impossible for people to leave behind the superficial snapshots of joy used to build a profile status. That other path reminds me of Pinocchio and the ever-open circus; abandoning all that fun certainly seems like madness, unless you have read the story yourself and already know how that kind of life ends.

Do you think it has never occurred to me to use all the aids of superficial media to build up a portfolio and gather followers? If my aim is not evil, perhaps it could be justified, much like the many educational channels trying to make a better world. Though Asha forbade me that hypocrisy, because if I use those tools, I can never criticise them again, I can also see that their impact is utterly diluted by endless repetition, like a single drop of rose extract in a sea.

I would rather be an unknown busker playing on El Puente Romano, turning the head of a passing runner for just a heartbeat, making him smile for a moment before he carries on, than a famous violinist on a shiny stage playing to an audience where a single spritz of their perfume costs enough to feed an entire starving village, yet who cannot tell an E-flat from an elephant, all while shouting “bravo” louder than anyone else. So yes, I chose that path, and yes, I know what I am not, and what I do not want to be.

Of course, walking this solitary road in a crowded world gets to you sometimes, and it feels daunting. Even if I must pave my path pebble by pebble, I carry on, since I know that when I arrive at my Carmen and find my own rhythm, I will never stop dancing to my own flamenco. I know exactly why I am here: because I chose to be, and what I want to be is yet to be revealed.

Simplemente no somos iguales.

Parte III: El Guerrero Rebelde Para Siempre
