What If Ampelmann Flees?

What If Ampelmann Flees?

I wasn’t sure if it was a daydream
Or if I was asleep.
I stood on the Sacromonte hillside,
A pilgrim, nothing more,
Facing a cave turned tavern.
An old crone,
A Gitana with dark, leathery skin,
Hunched like a stone by the doorway.

Her wrinkles folded like a thick book
Whose pages I could flip.
Spooked, I turned to leave,
But she held my hand firm.
Her eyes were deep wells
In the dark hillside.
Reading the smooth lines of my palm,
Her toothless mouth grinned:

“It is your birthday today!
And you will be in love!”

I struggled to free my hand,
In vain;
I was anchored to her,
And she to the ancient cave.

“I am not in love,” I said, “I am love.”

She laughed.
“Come on, man, cut the crap.”

Annoyed, I pulled back:
“I am bound to the purest love.
What are you talking about?”

She mumbled in acento andaluz:
“I speak not of celestial love,
But terrestrial.”

I answered:
“You know nothing about me, do you?
Let me tell you why
I despise the terrestrial love,
Spoken with a mouth full of lies.

We weren’t supposed to end up here.
Do you know why?
Let me begin with a story.
The beginning.
We learn to speak, to count,
At our mothers’ knees,
And they at theirs,
Yet no one knows the origin.

Man was not a man at the dawn,
Nor a sightless worm.
Darwin’s tale is a fiction too.
Let me guide your steps to the source.

First we were given the thoughts,
Then the words to voice our doubts.
Yet man manufactured the numbers:
The birth of the first system.

And along the way, we lost our way.

Systems became nutshells of systems,
Zero invented alongside the devil,
For better and worse.

Then intellect found prime numbers,
Lonelier than vowels,
Fenced by families of odds and evens.
You think I have lost the plot,
But not me. We all have.

In a world with no line
Between invention and discovery,
Between fantasy and reality,
Where lies were not untrue,
And love was but a sham-voodoo.

The reality that unfolded
In the lonely life of an Ampelmann
At a very busy junction,
Watching a world that rushes past.

We weep for an Ampelmann,
Yet offer no mercy to a real man.

‘One’ predated numbers,
And before ‘one’
There was light.

Word followed sound,
And before sound
There was vibration.

The vessel was Asha.
Asha and vessel
Were wholeness.

Yet not ‘one’,
But pure existence.

Which brings me back to love:
Love is vibration,
Love is light,
The very heartbeat
Of an ocean at sunset.
But am I Asha?
Are you Asha?
Can we sense the pure existence?
Who truly feels?”

She patiently listened.
I wasn’t sure if I was ranting
Or talking reason.

She said: sit down and listen.
“When I asked my ancestors,
And they asked theirs,
And the question climbed
Back to the source,
The spirits came directly from above.
So I asked Him:
Why all these charades?
He only shrugged,
‘If you knew,
You would never play along.
Yet there are some
Who understand.’

Do we have a choice,
Or is it another sleight?
He smiled.
‘Have I ever told you
How a reflection
Differs from a shadow?
Yes,’ He confirmed,
‘You have a choice.'”

I just felt a sudden beat:
We shouldn’t have invented the wheel,
Nor zero nor the devil.
We should have remained in the caves,
Then we never had dinosaurs,
No polymers nor atomic pollution.

She answered with el cante:
“There were some
Who knew the difference.
If I find the path
Where a man with ignited fire
Crosses,
I take the dirt
And turn it to an idol.
Though worshipper and ignorant are akin,
I am neither,
But a Gitana:
Flamenco is my blood and soul.

Have you ever lost yourself
To compás,
To your puppet master’s will?

An idol at the altar,
Only a reminder in despair.
A delicate rose
For the moments of anger.

If you do not know the game,
Simply do not play.
A controlling mind
Knows nothing of love.

Can you love me?
Can you kiss me,
Or make me feel loved?

No, you cannot.
Hence you know nothing of love.

You have a chance to live and love,
Illusion or not.
Waste your life on details:
Knowing the violin
Does not make you Paganini.

Start all over again.”

I opened my eyes,
José Mercé singing
A palo seco
Of Rocío Jurado.
Not just him,
The very bricks of Teatro Romea,
The particles of air,
Vibrating with joy.

And I finally learnt
That I did not know
That I did not know.

Philosophy,
Enlightenment,
Count for nothing,
If a smile can be brought
To the life of another.

¿Y Si El Ampelmann Huye?

En vano;
Estaba anclado a ella,
Y ella a la cueva antigua.

“No estoy enamorado”, dije, “soy amor.”

Ella se rió.
“Vamos, hombre, deja de tonterías.”

Molesto, me eché atrás:
“Estoy unido al amor más puro.
¿De qué estás hablando?”

Ella murmuró en acento andaluz:
“No hablo del amor celestial,
Sino del terrestre.”

Respondí:
“No sabes nada de mí, ¿verdad?
Déjame decirte por qué
Desprecio el amor terrestre,
Dicho con una boca llena de mentiras.

No debíamos haber acabado aquí.
¿Sabes por qué?
Déjame empezar con una historia.
El principio.
Aprendemos a hablar, a contar,

Asha y vaso
Eran plenitud.

Sin embargo, no “uno”,
Sino existencia pura.

Lo cual me devuelve al amor:
El amor es vibración,
El amor es luz,
Es el mismo latido
De un océano al atardecer.
Pero ¿soy yo Asha?
¿Eres tú Asha?
¿Podemos sentir la existencia pura?
¿Quién siente de verdad?”

Ella escuchó con paciencia.
No estaba seguro si estaba desvariando
O hablando con razón.

Ella dijo: siéntate y escucha.
“Cuando pregunté a mis ancestros,
Y ellos preguntaron a los suyos,
Y la pregunta subió
Hasta la fuente,
Los espíritus vinieron directamente de arriba.
Así que le pregunté a Él:
¿Por qué todas estas farsas?
Él solo se encogió de hombros,
‘Si supieras,
Nunca jugarías el juego.
Sin embargo, hay algunos
Que entienden.’

¿Tenemos elección,
O es otra artimaña?
Él sonrió.
‘¿Alguna vez te he contado
Cómo un reflejo
Difiere de una sombra?
Sí’, confirmó Él,
‘Tienes elección.'”

Sentí un latido repentino:
No deberíamos haber inventado la rueda,
Ni el cero ni el diablo.
Deberíamos habernos quedado en las cuevas,
Entonces nunca habríamos tenido dinosaurios,
Ni polímeros ni contaminación atómica.

Ella respondió con el cante:
“Hubo algunos
Que conocían la diferencia.
Si encuentro el camino
Donde un hombre con fuego encendido
Cruza,
Tomo la tierra
Y la convierto en un ídolo.
Aunque el adorador y el ignorante son afines,
Yo no soy ninguno de los dos,
Sino una gitana:
El flamenco es mi sangre y mi alma.

¿Alguna vez te has perdido
En el compás,
En la voluntad de tu titiritero?

Un ídolo en el altar,
Solo un recordatorio en la desesperación.
Una rosa delicada
Para los momentos de ira.

Si no conoces el juego,
Simplemente no juegues.
Una mente controladora
No sabe nada del amor.

¿Puedes amarme?
¿Puedes besarme,
O hacerme sentir amado?

No, no puedes.
Por lo tanto, no sabes nada del amor.

Tienes la oportunidad de vivir y amar,
Ilusión o no.
Desperdicia tu vida en detalles:
Conocer el violín
No te convierte en Paganini.

Empieza de nuevo.”

Abrí los ojos,
José Mercé cantando
Un palo seco
De Rocío Jurado.
No solo él,
Los mismísimos ladrillos del Teatro Romea,
Las partículas del aire,
Vibrando de alegría.

Y finalmente aprendí
Que no sabía
Que no sabía.

La filosofía,
La iluminación,
No cuentan para nada,
Si una sonrisa puede llevarse
A la vida de otro.
